Common HVAC Symptoms and What Causes Them

When your heating or cooling system isn’t working, you’ll notice symptoms that could be caused by different mechanical issues. Some require immediate service, and some you can remedy on your own. Here are a few of the most common HVAC symptoms we see, what usually causes them, and how you know when it’s time to call in the experts.

Air conditioning that runs constantly without cooling your home could indicate:

  • low refrigerant,
  • a dirty or frozen evaporator coil,
  • a failing compressor, or,
  • a clogged air filter that is restricting airflow.

First, check for water near your air handler – that would require a call right away. Then, check your filter.

On the Eastern Shore, salt air corrosion on the outdoor condenser coil is a frequent contributor. Turn the system off to prevent compressor damage and schedule a diagnostic.

Warm air from a cooling system could be due to:

  • a refrigerant leak,
  • a tripped breaker on the outdoor unit,
  • frozen coils, or,
  • a thermostat set incorrectly.

Check the thermostat and breaker first. If both appear normal and set correctly, and air is still warm, the system needs professional diagnostics before further damage occurs.

Of all the strange noises your HVAC could make, they’re distinctive and indicate different potential problems.

  • Banging often indicates a loose or broken internal part.
  • Grinding suggests motor bearing failure.
  • Hissing can mean a refrigerant leak or ductwork pressure issue.
  • Squealing usually points to a worn blower belt or motor.

Any new, persistent HVAC noise warrants a service call before your home heats up, and any damage gets worse.

Short-cycling wears out your system fast and drives up energy bills. Common causes in the summer include:

  • an oversized unit,
  • a dirty air filter,
  • a failing thermostat,
  • low refrigerant, or,
  • a frozen evaporator coil.

Check the filter first, and replace it if needed. If short-cycling continues, a diagnostic service call from our NATE-certified technicians can pinpoint the root cause.

If you have to put your hand up to a vent to see if the air is blowing, that’s already a problem. Weak airflow could be caused by:

  • a clogged filter,
  • blocked or leaking ductwork,
  • a failing blower motor, or,
  • frozen coils.

In coastal homes, duct leakage from humidity and temperature fluctuations is pretty common. Start by replacing the filter. Persistent weak airflow may require a ductwork and blower inspection.

Water near the indoor air handler has the potential for devastating damage to your home, so we flag that symptom for an immediate repair call. Water could indicate a minor issue or one that needs a more extensive repair, but stopping the water intrusion into your home is the top priority.

Water can indicate:

  • a clogged condensate drain line,
  • a cracked drain pan,
  • a frozen evaporator coil that has thawed, or,
  • a disconnected drain hose.

Turn off the system to prevent more water from collecting, begin drying the area, and call for service. Humid Delmarva summers make condensate line issues one of the most common repair calls we receive, and our techs can offer a few easy, regular maintenance tips for preventing that simple, but potentially damaging, issue.

When your nose tells you something isn’t right, it’s a good idea to listen. Weird smells can indicate an emergency in some cases:

  • A musty smell often points to mold or mildew in the ductwork or on a wet evaporator coil. You’ll want us to check that out, because it can lead to health issues if the cause isn’t addressed.
  • A burning smell can indicate an electrical issue or an overheating motor, and should be treated as urgent. Turn the system off immediately and call for emergency service if you smell burning.

Don’t sleep on a system that trips its breaker, because that’s more than just an annoyance. An HVAC system that repeatedly trips the breaker is signaling:

  • an electrical fault,
  • a short in the compressor, or,
  • a dirty condenser causing the system to overdraw power.

Do not repeatedly reset the breaker. We know you’re busy and just need AC, but running a system that trips is a fire and equipment risk. That breaker is designed to protect your home, so schedule diagnostic service and let our team find out what’s causing it to trip.
